Alexander Zverev was thrilled with the Davis Cup performance he delivered against Stan Wawrinka as he described it as his best performance since returning from a long injury break. In front of his home fans in Trier, Zverev ousted Wawrinka 6-4 6-1 to tie the Germany and Switzerland Davis Cup tie to one win apiece after the opening day.
In the first match of the tie, Marc-Andrea Huesler beat Oscar Otte to give Switzerland a 1-0 lead. Zverev then came out and handled the business against Wawrinka to keep Germany alive. “I think it’s important to go into tomorrow’s ties with a 1-1 [scoreline].
Obviously I’m very happy with my game. I think that was the best match since my injury. It’s going in a positive way and I hope I can continue progressing,” Zverev said, per the Davis Cup website. After winning the first set, Zverev dominated the second set to complete a straight-set win.
“I think I played a lot more aggressive and maybe Stan’s spirit went down a little bit, but in the end I picked up my level and I’m very happy with that,” Zverev added.
How Zverev defeated Wawrinka
The first break of the match was seen in the fourth game, when Zverev broke Wawrinka to open a 3-1 lead.
Down by a break, Wawrinka quickly responded as he broke back Zverev in the fifth game. In the 10th game – when Wawrinka was serving to stay in the first set – Zverev broke the Swiss to claim the opener. Losing the first set in such a way proved to be devastating for Wawrinka, who didn’t stand much of a chance in the second set.
Zverev and Wawrinka were tied to one game apiece in the second set, before the German went on to claim back-to-back breaks and win five games in a row to complete a straight-set win in style.
