Tournament with a recent history (starting from 2000) and all linked to the double recognition by Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour (even when it was the European Tour), the Alfred Dunhill Championship, as it has been since 2005, returns to Leopard Creek Country Malelane Club.
This is a return, because last year, due to a rapid spread of Covid-19, the event was quickly cancelled. The latest winner is therefore Christiaan Bezuidenhout in 2020.
Alfred Dunhill Championship, schedule
The South African presence remains high, as it is logical that it is: for many big names in the country it is inevitable to get involved here too, before the last event of the year next week in Mauritius.
There is also Ernie Els, who at 53 still intends to get involved even if the best is over. It was he who won for the first time at Leopard Creek in 2005; among those who want to follow in his footsteps is Thriston Lawrence, in shape as demonstrated a few days ago.
For Italy, only one stage man, Edoardo Molinari, fresh from ninth place at the South African Open, where he toured with great constancy. His is a good end of the year, also considered the 15th at the Portugal Masters and before that the 4th at the Spanish Open.
Streaming-only coverage this week between GolfTv, Discovery+ and Eurosport Player. The first two rounds will be broadcast from 11:00 to 16:00, the second two from 11:00 to 15:30 (on Sundays it is obviously except in the case of playoffs).
The tournament was created in 2001. It took the place of the Alfred Dunhill Cup, a competition contested by teams of three golfers. However, this competition, faced with the growing importance of the Golf World Cup, had become a less popular competition.
In order to improve the notoriety and the interest of the event, the tournament is coupled with a Pro-Am tournament where personalities are invited; among these have notably appeared Nigel Mansell, Ian Botham, Gary Lineker, Boris Becker, Michael Douglas, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Vaughan, Hugh Grant, or Jamie Dornan.
