Andrea Petkovic reveals Aryna Sabalenka turned to a sports scientist and bio-scientist in her efforts to improve her service. When Petkovic practiced with Sabalenka at last year’s US Open, she noticed the lengths Sabalenka was going to improve the aspect of the game that was causing her major problems in the first half of the 2022 season.
“When we practiced at the US Open, Aryna was still shaky on serve, but started working with a sports scientist AND bio-scientist on-site. She spent hours just serving and analyzing her flaws in advanced contexts,” Petkovic said of Sabalenka’s efforts to improve her serve.

Sabalenka’s serve is now looking much better
Last year, Sabalenka led the WTA Tour with 428 double faults served.
After her first six matches of the 2023 season, Sabalenka owns a 6-0 record. In those six matches played, Sabalenka has served 35 aces and 22 double faults. For example, at the start of the 2022 season, Sabalenka nearly combined for 40 double faults in just two matches.
Now, Sabalenka’s serve is looking much better and is a big reason why she is still unbeaten at the start of the 2023 season. “I would say that before Cincinnati I changed my serve quite a lot and we’ll keep working on these improvements.
There’s a lot of things I’m focusing on with my serve and I changed it a lot, which really helps me a lot. I definitely feel much more comfortable than it was in the beginning of last season, but there are still a lot of things to improve and I’m really working hard to make sure my serve is going to be the best next season,” Sabalenka said on the WTA Insider podcast at the start of the 2023 season.
Meanwhile, Sabalenka has been through to the Australian Open third round. Sabalenka will be fighting against Elise Mertens for a place in the Australian Open round-of-16.
