Boris Becker described Andy Murray’s recent heroics as “simply incredible” and noted this might be the year when the Briton will make another deep Wimbledon run. Since the start of the 2023 season, Murray has had several thriller wins, in which he saved match points.
At the Australian Open, Murray saved a match point en route to beating Matteo Berrettini, while he recovered from two sets down to beat Thanasi Kokkinakis in the second round at Melbourne Park. Last week in Doha, Murray had two epic wins – he saved three match points against Lorenzo Sonego and five match points against Jiri Lehecka, respectively.
Unfortunately for Murray, he fell just short of winning his first title since 2019 as he was beaten by Daniil Medvedev in the Doha final.
Becker praises Murray: Simply incredible
“Simply incredible. I wouldn’t have expected him to come back that strong after his hip surgery.
How he wrestles down his opponent, mostly over three sets, and also playing great tennis, as well in the final against Danill Medvedev. It is incredible how he managed to come back like this, and I want to look ahead a little bit.
If he keeps on playing like this and winning matches, I’m looking forward to Wimbledon. I think he might be on a good level there – on his favourite surface, which is grass,” Becker told Eurosport. Meanwhile, it is not a secret that Murray wants to make at least one more deep Grand Slam run before retiring from pro tennis.
Murray, a three-time Grand Slam champion, hasn’t made a deep Major run since reaching the Wimbledon quarterfinal in 2017. Last year, Murray entered Wimbledon with big expectations as he was hoping to make a strong run. But it didn’t happen after Murray was beaten by John Isner in the Wimbledon second round.
This year, Murray is reiterating the same message as he believes Wimbledon is his best shot at making a deep Grand Slam run.
