After struggling with her game and results for a few years, 29-year-old Garcia stunningly rediscovered her best tennis in the second part of the 2022 season.
But after winning a maiden WTA 1000 title in Cincinnati and reaching the US Open semifinal, Garcia shockingly stopped working with Perret just before the Wta Finals. Garcia managed to win the WTA Finals but she hasn’t been that impressive so far in 2023.
Now, Garcia is reuniting with coach Perret.
Garcia hopes Perret can help her turn her season around
So far in 2023, Garcia is 17-8. Garcia has featured in two finals this year as she ended as runner-up in Lyon and Monterrey.
But the problem is that Garcia hasn’t been playing well in the biggest tournaments. At the Australian Open, Garcia suffered a surprise defeat in the round-of-16 to Magda Linette. Before the Australian Open started, Garcia made it perfectly clear that her goal was to become a Grand Slam champion in Australia.
In the end, Garcia’s Australian Open ended in a major disappointment. On the WTA 1000 level, Garcia hasn’t been that great so far in 2023. In Dubai, Garcia was beaten by Madison Keys in her opener at the tournament. During the Sunshine Double, Garcia made the Indian Wells round-of-16 and suffered a round-of-16 defeat in Miami.
Now, Garcia reveals she put too much pressure on herself at the start of the season. “The last few weeks, I haven’t followed the results of others too much, who won what. I couldn’t, in fact. It put too much pressure on me. I wanted to find myself.
Since the beginning of the year, I panicked too much, I couldn’t think anymore,” Garcia said. It remains to be seen if Perret’s return will help Garcia start playing better.
