Following a popular referendum (defined as “non-binding”) in 2012, with 61.15% of favorable preferences, the local inhabitants chose to become a federal state of the United States: following this result (subsequently confirmed from a further electoral consultation held in 2017) an official request for the initiation of the legislative process was thus filed with the United States Congress which could transform the island into a State of the Union by 2025, to date not still approved.
