With a population of 135,436 inhabitants (2021), it is the most populous city in the Tarragonès region, in the Camp de Tarragona region and is the seventh most populous city in Catalonia. Its location on the shores of the Mediterranean on the Costa Daurada, with warm water beaches, as well as its leisure centers and historical tradition and artistic heritage, make it a major tourist attraction.
Founded in the 3rd century BC under the name of Tàrraco, it has an important sea port and is the center of the Tarragona Petrochemical Complex, one of the most important in southern Europe. The Romans made it the capital of the Tarraconense province, which is why it still preserves remarkable archaeological remains from this era that have been declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco.
