Daniil Medvedev paid tribute to the Big Four after the Doha final as he admitted that “it is just an amazing feeling” to play against Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. Medvedev, 27, saw off Murray 6-4 6-4 in the Doha final to lift his second title of the year.
“You know, talking about, like, new generation, old generation, well, I’m 27, so I don’t think I’m any more new generation. I’m like medium. So just, yeah, was just happy to see Andy on the other side of the net because he’s such a legend.
It’s every time I play against him, Novak, Roger, well, not anymore, Rafa, it’s just an amazing feeling. It’s an amazing atmosphere all the time. I was happy to share this final with him,” Medvedev said, per Sportskeeda.
Medvedev saw off Murray in straight sets for the Doha title
Medvedev got off to a very strong start to the Doha final, breaking Murray in the very first game of the match.
After saving two break points in the fourth game, Medvedev broke Murray for the second time in the fifth game to open a 4-1 lead. Down by two breaks, Murray refused to quit as he got one break back in the sixth game. After getting one break back, Murray had a chance to get back the second break as well but Medvedev saved a break point in the eighth game to open a 5-3 lead.
In the 10th game, Medvedev routinely served out for the first set. After winning the first set, Medvedev started the second set by breaking Murray in the first game. Down by a set and a break, Murray didn’t quit as he broke back Medvedev in the sixth game to tie the second set to three games apiece.
However, blowing an early second-set break didn’t impact Medvedev, who broke Murray again in the ninth game for a 5-4 lead before serving out for the match in the following game.
