
Ryder Cup 2023, the USA team has a new vice-captain: Davis Love III. Chosen by Zach Johnson, guide of the United States in the challenge to the Europe team scheduled from 29 September to 1 October, he joins Steve Stricker, already nominated.
“His passion for this event is unmatched. I will rely heavily on his experience and intuition. Our goal is clear: to repeat the success achieved in 2021 in Wisconsin”, Johnson’s words of welcome.
Davis Love III, Ryder Cup
Already twice captain of the United States in Ryder Cup, in 2012 and 2016, vice-captain in 2010, 2018 and 2021, Love III is a Major champion (in 1997 he won the PGA Championship).
“The Ryder Cup is a special event and I’m honored to have received this assignment. I’m ready to do whatever it takes to help Zach and the whole USA team. The goal is to win the competition”, the satisfaction and determination of Love III who captained the USA in Charlotte in the Presidents Cup last September.
He was introduced to the game of golf by his father, Davis Love II, a nationally recognized golf instructor. After attending the University of North Carolina, Love III became a professional golfer in 1985. He quickly established himself on the PGA Tour and won his first tournament in 1987.
In all, he has 21 wins to date in this major tournament series, including his only major win, the PGA Championship in 1997, as well as the prestigious Players Championship in 1992 and 2003. Love is career money ranked with earnings of almost $36 million – in fifth place.
In the world golf rankings, he was among the top 10 for many years. Love III, with friend and partner Fred Couples, clinched the World Cup for the USA four straight years from 1992 to 1995. He was in the Ryder Cup from 1993 to 2004 and in the Presidents Cup from 1994 to 2005 without a break in the American team.
In 2012 and 2016, he led the USA team at the Ryder Cup as a non-playing captain. Davis Love III is married to his wife Robin and has two children. The family has resided in St. Simons Island, Georgia since the early 1990s. Since 1994 he has run Love Golf Design with his younger brother Mark, who is also his caddy. The company is engaged in the design of golf courses, primarily in the southeastern United States.
