Auburn University’s DJ Bennett gets the SEC Freshman of the Week honors for the first time, the league announced Wednesday. This is the fourth time that an Auburn player has been picked for the honor, as Kaitlyn Carnicella was named SEC Freshman of the Week on three occasions earlier this season.
Bennett will look to continue her impressive play on Friday when the Tigers battle Kentucky on the road at 11:00 CT. Bennett had a perfect weekend for the Tigers, going 2-0 in singles and 1-0 in doubles. Her straight set win over LSU’s Nina Geissler gave Auburn their first point of the game which was ultimately won by the team 4-3.
She also recorded her third singles win over a ranked opponent on Sunday this season, defeating Texas A&M’s Jayci Goldsmith, the 120th ranked singles player in the country, by a score of 6-3, 6-2. With the two singles hits, the freshman now has 11 singles double hits, which is tied for most on the Auburn team, and she has improved her singles conference record to 5-2.
Bennett also scored a doubles win with Carnicella on Friday, as the freshman duo defeated LSU’s Nina Geissler and Nikita Vishwase by a score of 6-1.
