Dominic Thiem believes Ben Shelton definitely looks like someone who could reach the top-10 ranking. Shelton, 20, is currently enjoying a career-high ranking of No 39 in the world. This week, Shelton recorded his first-ever ATP clay win as he beat Constant Lestienne 7-5 7-5 in the Estoril first round.
As a reward, Shelton now gets a chance to play next against two-time French Open finalist Thiem. “He is a contender for the top 10. Incredible athlete, great serve. It’s his first time playing on clay so I will try to use my claycourt experience,” Thiem said of Shelton.
Thiem has a far much more experience on clay than Shelton does but the American is seemingly enjoying very much his time in Estoril. “I am really happy to be here in Portugal. I want to thank the whole crowd for their support today.
I was hearing the chants. I am really enjoying my time here, so hopefully I can keep it going,” Shelton said after clinching his first clay win.
Can Thiem win back-to-back matches?
On Tuesday, Thiem recovered from a set down to beat Sebastian Ofner 3-6 6-3 6-4 in the Estoril first round.
After starting the season with a 1-8 record, Thiem clinched his second win of the year after beating Ofner. Following his Estoril first-round win, Thiem made an interesting observation. “I’m actually playing much better than in the second half of 2022 when I was winning matches.
My ball is heavier, I can hurt opponents. Just some things aren’t clicking as I want. I hope this win (and week) is the start of something,” Thiem said. Thiem and Shelton are set to meet for the first time in their respective careers.
Even though Shelton has had far better results than Thiem in 2023, the Austrian definitely cannot be taken for granted considering his resume on clay courts.
