Emma Raducanu has revealed that last year’s wrist issue has returned and she is once again experiencing wrist pain and discomfort. Toward the end of the 2022 season, Raducanu was forced to miss a couple of events and end her season prematurely due to a wrist injury.
However, the wrist was healed before the start of the season and it didn’t cause Raducanu any problems at the start of the 2023 season. On Tuesday, Raducanu pulled out of the Eisenhower Cup in Indian Wells, a Tie Break Tens mixed doubles event.
Now, Raducanu is just hoping to be able to play on Thursday against Danka Kovinic in the Australian Open first round. “The same issue that I had last year has stared to flare back up. I’ve definitely been managing my load. It’s something that has just come back, so I’m trying to be as cautious as possible.
I’m going to do everything I can to be there tomorrow. I think we always play through pain and it’s just a matter of how much can you take – I’m looking forward to hopefully being out there tomorrow,” Raducanu told BBC Sport.
Raducanu: When it rains, it pours
“It affected me bad for the short term so I haven’t prepared much. I’ve probably never felt so sick in my life. When it rains, it pours. This and the infection – it’s obviously a challenge. My preparation hasn’t been ideal.
I played on the weekend and then I rested it – it’s how you manage things when you aren’t prepared,” Raducanu added. In her very first tournament of the season, Raducanu rolled her ankle in Auckland and just barely managed to compete at the Australian Open.
Last week, Raducanu was scheduled to play her first tournament since the Australian Open but had to withdraw from Austin due to tonsilitis. Now, Raducanu could be out of Indian Wells as well.
