When we talk about Novak Djokovic we talk about one of the strongest tennis players in history. His numbers are incredible, not only the 21 Grand Slam titles he has won, but also his other records, the numbers that characterize him as the tennis player with the most weeks at the top of the ATP ranking, or the records he has had thanks to to his successes in Masters 1000 and ATP Finals.
His victory at the recent ATP Finals in Turin gave Nole his sixth success in this category, joining his great rival Novak Djokovic at the top of the standings: the two are the only tennis players to have won six ATP Finals in the history of this sport.
Novak Djokovic has always won on all surfaces, both on clay and on grass, but the surface on which he expresses his best tennis and on which he seems unbeatable at times is concrete. Australia, Europe or the United States, the result does not change, Nole’s numbers are terrifying and many say that Djokovic is the strongest in history when it comes to this surface.
The Danish tennis player Holger Rune, for his part, is a young promise, an athlete who is beginning to make a name for himself in the world of tennis and who recently beat Nole in the final of the Masters 1000 in Paris-Bercy, a comeback victory with a score of 3-6;6-3;7-5.
In that match in Paris, Rune did well to never give up. He lost the first set but came from behind, winning the second and coming back from point to point against Novak Djokovic, winning the third set 7-5. Rune thus joined a small circle of athletes that really only included him and Swiss champion Stan Wawrinka.
Both Rune and Wawrinka are, in fact, the only tennis players to have defeated Novak Djokovic in a specific final after the Serb won the first set of the match.
McNamee talks about Djokovic
Novak Djokovic remains “the best player” in the world and he will “add gravy and gravitas” to the 2023 Australian tennis summer with doubles great Paul McNamee saying he is the favourite to win next year’s Australian Open.
“He was the best player going in [last summer] and, on form, he is still the best player, especially on hard court, so he deserves to be favourite,” he told The Age. “I think winning 10 has a special ring to it.
The only other man who’s won 10 [at a Grand Slam event] is Rafa [Nadal] at the French, so I think he’ll be going hard to get a 10th Australian Open, especially after last year. I’m hoping he can get it. For me, he’s a person of principle.
Not everyone agrees with what his position is, but he stands by his word and missed two Grand Slams this year. That’s a lot to miss when you’re one off winning the most Grand Slams, so I respect it and I hope he is well received”.
