World No 1 Iga Swiatek insisted Camila Osorio was a very difficult opponent despite the result suggesting otherwise. On Wednesday, Swiatek saw off 84th-ranked Osorio 6-2 6-3 to progress into the Australian Open third round.
“It was really intense, and pretty physical. I think it was much tougher than what the score says,” Swiatek said after the match, per the WTA website. Swiatek and Osorio, both 21 years old, played against each other for the first time.
“I know [Osorio is] gonna fight till the end and she’s not going to give anything for free. She made some good decisions as well. I’m pretty happy that I was solid, and that’s the most important thing for me,” Swiatek added.
Swiatek closed out Osorio in two sets
Swiatek got off to a great start to the match, claiming back-to-back breaks to open an early 4-0 lead. In the rest of the set, Swiatek and Osorio traded two breaks on each side as the Pole managed to close out the first set with a 6-2 score.
After winning the first set, Swiatek saved a break point in the first game of the second set before claiming back-to-back breaks in the fourth and sixth games to open a 5-1 lead. Swiatek failed to serve out for the match in the seventh game, but managed to do so in the ninth game.
After the match, Swiatek wrote on the camera lens: “Sushi or steak tonight?” “Tonight I’m for sure going to have a free evening and it’s going to be much nicer because yesterday I was already thinking about the match, so I’m going to try to enjoy it.
Maybe tonight a nice dinner because I’ve been eating sushi for the whole week and I can’t look at it anymore,” Swiatek said. Meanwhile, Swiatek plays Cristina Bucsa in the Australian Open third round. Swiatek and Bucsa will be meeting for the first time when they meet at Melbourne Park.
