World No. 1 Iga Swiatek revealed there were many players who reached out to congratulate her on her stunning winning streak, but also added that there were probably some who were jealous of her astonishing run. Between late-February and early-July, Swiatek won 37 consecutive matches.
After winning six consecutive titles, Swiatek’s run ended at Wimbledon, where she suffered a shock third round defeat to Alize Cornet. “Well, I know that during all these tournaments, there were many players who congratulated me,” Swiatek said.
“I felt like it was really appreciated that I’m so consistent, that I’m doing so much work. But honestly, I don’t know how they feel about that, what they feel about that. I got positive feedback even from Alize Cornet when she won and ended that streak.
I’m pretty happy they are supportive, but I’m sure that some of them are jealous a little bit. We are all working to win basically, even though we should focus on the process and stuff. It’s normal to want to win.
I’m just happy that they are not showing it so much that they kind of envy it. I would envy as well. I’m happy that I was the one who was winning for a while.”
Swiatek felt relieved in some way safter ending her winning a streak
After suffering a surprise defeat at Wimbledon, Swiatek admitted that she sensed that her winning streak could come to an end at The Championships.
Swiatek, who has proved that she can win on hard and clay, didn’t play any grass tournaments leading up to Wimbledon. Since Swiatek still hasn’t really figured out how to dominate on grass, some thought that Wimbledon would definitely be the tournament where she would finally lose.
That in the end turned out to be correct as Swiatek suffered a 6-4 6-2 loss to Cornet in the Wimbledon third round. Now, Swiatek has been through to the US Open last-16, where she plays Jule Niemeier.
Iga Swiatek is unstoppable this season. I suppose she is one of the favorites for winning the title of the US Open 2022.
