Ivan Ljubicic, former number three and last coach of Roger Federer, has no doubts about the future of the Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner. Only Daniil Medvedev managed to win more games than Sinner in 2023 and the excellent tournaments held in Indian Wells and Miami could give life to the definitive leap in quality.
The Italian stopped in the semifinals in California losing in two sets against Carlos Alcaraz. The following week, still in the semifinals, he took his revenge on the Spaniard and came close to his first success in a Masters 1000 event.
Exhausted by the battle with Alcaraz, Sinner didn’t appear in the best physical condition and succumbed to Medvedev in straight sets. “Jannik Sinner is growing well. Last year he lost the chance to play the important matches, semifinals and finals of major tournaments.
What he is doing this year instead. He is a boy destined to remain at the top of the rankings for many years in the future,” said Ljubicic.

The 21-year-old Italian will be busy in Monte-Carlo next week and hasn’t been particularly lucky with the draw.
Sinner will populate the top part of the main draw, the same as Novak Djokovic, and will face one between Diego Schwartzman and David Goffin in the second round. The first seed in his path bears the name and surname of Hubert Hurkacz, the main suspect to win the round of 16 in that portion of the draw.
Ljubicic said to Super Tennis: “Jannik is following the right path, step by step. There is no doubt that he and Alcaraz will face off many more times. Three draws in direct matches, spectacular matches. I don’t think they have already taken the Tour in hand , there will be other rivals.
The new generation is coming. Obviously the old guard, especially Novak, is still there and will still have a lot to say. Novak in Monte-Carlo lived years in which he didn’t play well. He didn’t play in the States United, but he will be ready and try to win.”
