In 2008, Djokovic captured his first Grand Slam title after beating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the Australian Open final.
Since then, Djokovic has won eight more Australian Open titles and he is the most successful player in Australian Open history. Also, Djokovic hasn’t had a loss at Melbourne Park since 2018. Djokovic won three consecutive Australian Open titles between 2019 and 2021, but then he was denied participation at the 2022 Australian Open.
After beating Carballes Baena, Djokovic took a moment to highlight how special Rod Laver Arena has been to him and his career. “Unbelievable atmosphere. Thank you for giving me such a welcoming reception I could only dream of.
I really feel very happy that I’m back in Australia and back here on the court where I’ve had the biggest success in my career. Definitely this court is the most special in my life, and I couldn’t ask for a better start to the tournament,” Djokovic said, per the Australian Open website.
Meanwhile, Djokovic is considered the top favorite for the Australian Open. Djokovic is in fine form at the start of the season, having won the Adelaide International in his first tournament of the year. So far in 2023, Djokovic owns a perfect 6-0 record. In his next Australian Open match, Djokovic will play either Enzo Couacaud or Hugo Dellien.
