2021 Australian Open finalist Jennifer Brady has revealed that she is targeting to compete at the French Open. Brady, 27, hasn’t played since 2021 Cincinnati, when she was forced to retire mid-match against Jelena Ostapenko due to a knee injury.
Shortly after her runner-up finish at Melbourne Park, Brady started experiencing a knee issue and she played through pain and discomfort for several months before taking a break from tennis to address the issue. During her appearance on Amazon Prime’s Sports Talk, former doubles world No 1 Rennae Stubbs asked Brady if she had a target for return.
“My goal is the French Open, that’s what I am shooting for. You know, I am out here, switching over to grinding on the red clay. Well, I wouldn’t say grinding here, but you know, getting the body used to sliding, getting used to, you know, a little bit of movement, all that kind of stuff,” Brady said on Sports TalkOnPrime, per Sportskeeda.
Brady optimistic this time everything will go right
Brady was targeting to return to tennis last year but it didn’t happen. But this time, Brady is optimistic that everything will go right. “Today, no, but you know what? We are on a better track than we were last year, we will tell you that.
Definitely on the right track, figuring things out, definitely not an easy case, so all kinds of little stuff going on. So, we are a on a better place than we were last year, that’s for sure,” Brady said. At the start of the 2021 season, Brady made her first Grand Slam final at the Australian Open.
In the Australian Open final, Brady suffered a straight-set defeat to Naomi Osaka. Shortly after her runner-up finish at the Australian Open, Brady rose to a career-high ranking of No 13 in the world. It remains to be seen if Brady will indeed be able to compete at the French Open, which starts in late May.
