Matteo Berrettini’s 2022 was a season conditioned by quite a few injuries. The Italian tennis player was unable to leave so many positive results during the year due to a series of events and due to a very often not at the top physical condition.
The 26-year-old undoubtedly did not have the best season of his career but, despite all the difficulties, he conquered an important semifinal at the Australian Open and triumphs in the Stuttgart and Queen’s competitions.
The sudden positivity to Covid-19 then led him to miss his most important appointment of the season (Wimbledon), because he had just returned from a final obtained in the past edition. Then it was a foot problem that stopped the Italian tennis player again, one step away from winning the ATP 250 in Naples, who missed both the Master 1000 in Paris-Bercy and the Davis Cup finals.
In recent days, much has been said about the choice made by Filippo Volandri during the Davis Cup semifinal between Italy and Canada. The current captain of the Italian team had to deal with the sudden injury of Simone Bolelli and was forced to give up the expert double player just at the most important moment.
Volandri has decided to field Matteo Berrettini paired with Fabio Fognini. Berrettini had not played an official match since the final loss against Lorenzo Musetti in Naples and did not play his best match against Felix Auger-Aliassime and Vasek Pospisil, who won in two closely fought sets.
Matteo Berrettini close 2022 with very negative and worrying data
However, the Italian did not leave his mark under a special statistical heading: in fact, throughout the year Berrettini was never able to beat any tennis player in the top 10 of the ATP world ranking.
On two matches played, Berrettini suffered a setback on both occasions, with the impossibility of being able to continue the adventure in the reference tournament: against the Spanish champion Rafael Nadal in Melbourne and in the final at the ATP 250 in Gstaad in front of a tough Casper Ruud.
In addition to Matteo Berrettini, six other top 50 athletes were also unable to beat a top 10 this year. Among these both Karen Khachanov (victory that has been missing since 2019) and Emil Ruusuvouri have a balance of 0-7.
Also present are the Frenchman Adrian Mannarino (0-5) and the other transalpine Arthur Rinderknech, with a 0-4. There is no shortage of Americans: Reilly Opelka has the same balance sheet as the blue (0-2), while Brandon Nakashima has remedied three stoppages against this type of player.
