A very difficult start to the season for Matteo Berrettini, so far. The Italian tennis player has never found the physical condition and the game in these first four months of the year and the results prove it. Leaving aside the Challenger experience in Phoenix, the last victory came at the end of February, against Elias Ymer in Acapulco, in Mexico.
In this year the balance is five victories at ATP level and six defeats, for a total of eleven matches played, and the first ones came in large numbers from Italy’s participation in the United Cup. But now it’s time to say goodbye to concrete to concentrate on clay: first appointment in Monte-Carlo, where he is unseeded in a Masters 1000 tournament for the first time since Cincinnati 2019.
The Italians said to Sky Sport: “I’m still the same, but my career is going through a different time and I’m also learning from it all. I paid the price for the many games played and also for the injuries I suffered, now I’m trying to work with the aim of playing as many games as possible.
This is a tournament that I particularly care about, I have the confidence of being able to find those sensations of some time ago.”
Matteo Berrettini: “Criticisms? I don’t understand them”
The negative results accumulated by Matteo Berrettini have brought with them criticism of the player.
Accusations that increased when the number three of Italy came out into the open with his new partner, the model Melissa Satta. “We see the glass half full: this means that Italy follows tennis. On the other hand, I don’t understand how these criticisms can arise, or that a relationship can distract me from my work.
But the only thing that matters is that I’m happy,” said the number three in Italy. Not being seeded, Berrettini will be engaged in the first round of Monte-Carlo: he will face the last descendant of the reign of serve and volleyball, Maxime Cressy, in his debut. He too, like the rest of the Italians, is present in the upper part of the board.
