As reported by the XULA website, Xavier University of Louisiana’s Nereo Suarez was announced Tuesday as the Red River Athletic Conference Player of the Week in men’s tennis for February 13-19. It is the third week in a row that the Gold Rush has won the RRAC award.
Mathieu Strauss was honored for January 30-February 5, and Bain won for February 6-12. Next up for XULA is a Wednesday matchup against William Carey in Hattiesburg, then three games Friday and Saturday in the LSUA tournament in Alexandria and Pineville.
It’s the first prize for Suarez, a freshman from Santa Fe, Argentina. Suarez was 2-0 in singles and 2-1 in doubles to help the Gold Rush win 2 of 3 at the Grizzly Invitational in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Sunday in XULA’s 4-0 win against No.
1 NAIA. 8 Lindsey Wilson, Suarez and Jacobi Bain grabbed the doubles point with a 6-2 win against Sebastian Junqhanns and Ilyas Coichari. Then Suarez beat Coichari 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 in singles. Suarez and Bain grabbed double points in Friday’s 4-0 win against 12th-ranked Cumberland.

Xavier’s athletic teams are called the Gold Rush and the Gold Nuggets. The university is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, primarily participating in the Red River Athletic Conference as of the 2021-22 academic year XULA competes in 12 intercollegiate varsity sports: men’s sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, tennis, and track and field; women’s sports include basketball, cross country, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball; and coed sports include competitive cheering.
