Netflix is a US company active in the streaming distribution of movies, television series and other paid entertainment content via the Internet. It was founded by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph on August 29, 1997 in Scotts Valley, California.
In 2014, Netflix expanded its film and television production and online distribution. Its headquarters are in Los Gatos, California. Other offices were later created in Brazil, India, Japan, South Korea, Spain, France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany and Italy.[3] It is among the major streaming platforms for movies and TV series together with Prime Video, Disney +, Crunchyroll, HBO Max, Hulu, Paramount + and Peacock.
It began as a DVD and video game rental business, although Hastings put sales aside about a year later. Users could reserve discs via the Internet and have them delivered directly to their homes via the postal service. Since 2008, the company has activated an online streaming service on demand, accessible through a special subscription, which soon became its main business.
Since 2011, the record rental service has been spun off and is offered by the Qwikster subsidiary. Netflix entered the production business in 2013, presenting its first series, House of Cards – The intrigues of power. It has since greatly expanded its production of movies and TV series, offering “Netflix Original” content.
It produced approximately 126 shows and movies in 2016, more than any other network or cable channel. Various content produced by Netflix has achieved considerable success with various nominations and some Oscar wins. In 2020, Netflix reached around 180 million subscribers worldwide; in fact, there was a surge in subscribers mainly linked to the COVID-19 pandemic that exploded in the first quarter of 2020.
It is a member of the standardization organization ECMA International (European Computer Manufacturers Association).
