He is the third Vice Captain appointed by Luke Donald. Nicolas Colsaerts went to support Thomas Bjorn and our Edoardo Molinari. He is the first Belgian to be part of the Team Europe staff, and for him the satisfaction is double, given that the Captain’s call came after Colsaerts spent most of 2022 in hospital, due to a rare autoimmune disease.
His new role behind the scenes has allowed him to see for himself how difficult the situation is in the DP World Tour family after LIV Golf burst onto the scene. And he shared his thoughts of him in an interview with The Times.
Nicolas Colsaerts, statements
“There is a part of me that wants the 12 best European players to represent Europe, precisely because of the history behind it” “It is a huge loss for the quality of the event” “I don’t know what decision will be made but, regardless of which side you belong to, the great loser is the spirit of the Ryder Cup” “It’s a small shame, let’s say”.
The next question concerned two pillars of Team Europe, Sergio Garcia and Ian James Poulter. “They’ve been receiving preferential treatment for several years, and now that someone else has come forward and they’ve chosen to follow along, they’re expecting to be treated the same again.” “I don’t like this” “It’s always hard to listen to someone criticize something you’re so fond of, and as far as I’m concerned, criticism hurts” “There are tons of people who are happy to see them play and would pay to see them” “But one can clearly perceive that, unfortunately, the atmosphere is completely different” “And it’s really sad.”
