Jelena Djokovic is excited about Novak Djokovic’s return to the Australian Open as she hopes for a triumphant result for her husband’s Melbourne Park campaign. 12 months after being denied participation in the Australian Open, Djokovic officially returned to Melbourne Park on Tuesday with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-0 victory over Roberto Carballes Baena.
Jelena Djokovic has witnessed many great moments at Melbourne Park, as her husband is a record nine-time Australian Open champion. “January tradition resumes. Let’s do it #NoleFAM,” Jelena Djokovic tweeted. In 2008, Djokovic won his first Grand Slam title after defeating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final of the Australian Open.
Since then, Djokovic has won another eight Australian Open titles and is the most decorated player in the tournament’s history. Furthermore, Djokovic has not had a loss at Melbourne Park since 2018. Djokovic won three consecutive Australian Open titles from 2019-2021, but was later denied participation in the 2022 Australian Open.
After beating Carballes Baena, Djokovic took a moment to highlight how special Rod Laver Arena has been for him and his career. “Amazing atmosphere. Thank you for giving me a welcome I could only dream of. I am very happy to be back in Australia and on the track where I have had the greatest success of my career.
Without a doubt, this court is the most special of my life, and I couldn’t ask for a better start to the tournament,” Djokovic said, according to the Australian Open website. Meanwhile, Djokovic is considered the top seed for the Australian Open.
Djokovic is in top form at the start of the season, having won the Adelaide International in his first tournament of the year.
Djokovic will do all he can
Speaking to the press after the win, Novak Djokovic admitted that he was “worried” by his injury situation.
“I am worried. I mean, I cannot say that I’m not. I have reason to be worried,” Novak Djokovic said. “But at the same time I have to accept the circumstances and try to adjust myself with my team. My physio and medical team has been doing everything possible so that I can be able to play every match,” he said.
“There’s not much more to talk about. There’s two choices: leave it or keep going. So I’m going to keep going. I’m going to try to play and compete with, of course, a great player Dimitrov in a couple days’ time,” he added.
