Paolo Bertolucci recently analyzed the current moment of men’s tennis, in the columns of the Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, extolling the growth and all the improvements of Jannik Sinner and explaining who are the best players to beat after the first three months of the 2023 season.
The former Italian tennis player was very clear and highlighted: “Right now the Tour is in the hands of four tennis players: the returning Djokovic who recovers the number one, obviously Alcaraz, Medvedev precisely and then Sinner.” The commentator for Sky Sport added to confirm his thesis: “Clay will also bring out other protagonists, we are waiting for Rafael Nadal.
Last year’s track tells us that, apart from Nole, Jannik is the one best equipped to be competitive on all surfaces and therefore to score important points towards the Finals every week. Daniil doesn’t look racing on clay and Alcaraz has yet to show adaptability on grass.” Bertolucci’s prediction is truly surprising: “I had gone so far as to predict the Italiann in the top five at the end of the year, but given his progress, one can dream of a rather rapid landing in the top 3.”
Sinner is ready for the clay swing
From 9 April, the Italian will be the star of the Monte-Carlo Master 1000, the inaugural tournament of the year on clay.
Not an easy test for the talented 21-year-old, who won’t have much time to prepare to face his first competition on a completely different surface than concrete. He will need the best possible adaptation to overcome the initial rounds and bring home a very good result in the third Master 1000 scheduled.
In the first two Sinners always pushed at least to the semifinals, an incredible performance that brought him to fourth place in the Race towards the ATP Finals in Turin. There aren’t many points that the native of San Candido will have to defend throughout the clay court part of the season, given that the only passage beyond the quarterfinals was in the ATP 250 in Umago, where he won the title in the final against Carlos Alcaraz.
