Coach Paul Annacone says he wants to see Novak Djokovic competing in the biggest tournaments in the world but noted that giving the Serb a special permission to enter the United States just might not be right. As per the current US vaccine laws, unvaccinated foreigners are not allowed to enter the nation.
Last week, Djordje Djokovic revealed that Team Djokovic provided the necessary documentation and applied for a special permission to enter the US. Recently, it has been reported that these vaccine rules will end in May, which will allow Djokovic to compete at the US Open without problems.
“As a tennis fan, I want him here. As someone who looks at the world realistically, I don’t know how they let him in and don’t let everyone in then. That just doesn’t make sense,” Annacone said of Tennis Channel, as quoted on Tennis365.
Annacone, Prakash Amritraj on the Djokovic US situation
Amritraj also noted that he wants Djokovic in the biggest tournaments in the world but added this could be a tricky situation. “It becomes a tricky situation at that point.
You know, if you excuse the great tennis player, then a lot of the family members and so forth who’ve been trying to get in, it’s a tricky situation, where do you make that call? But a lot of other countries have loosened up these restrictions and it seems it is coming off in May.
So should they even be here right now? If you just look at it from a tennis perspective, he’s sort of established himself as the best tennis player in the world. So, for all of us, it’s a huge shame not to have him at two of the biggest events that we have,” Amritraj said.
Last year, Djokovic missed the US Open and three Masters events in the United States. It remains to be seen if and how many tournaments will Djokovic be allowed to play in the United States this year.
