As reported by the Pepperdine University website, the women’s team, grabbed a vast majority of the West Coast Conference weekly honors, as Lisa Zaar was named the 2023 WCC Singles Player of the Week and the duo of Savannah Broadus and Janice Tjen was recognized as WCC Doubles Team of the Week.
Zaar defeated three ranked opponents to claim a flyweight title at the Freeman Memorial Championship over the weekend. The 2022 ITA All-American in singles defeated No. 72 Sofia Rojas (Oklahoma State) 6-4, 6-4 in straight sets on Friday before earning a comeback win over No.
44 Alexis Blokhina of Stanford in the semifinals of Saturday, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3. Zaar overcame No. 38 Alexandra Yepifanova 6-1, 6-4 in straight sets on Sunday to win the title. One of the top doubles pairings in the country, #4 Broadus (Carrolton, Texas) and Tjen (Jakarta, Indonesia) picked up where they left off last season, knocking out Catanzarite and Tian of UCLA 6-1 along with Miyamoto of Oklahoma State and Peyre, 6-4, to claim a co-doubles championship at the Freeman Memorial Championship in Las Vegas over the weekend.
The duo improve to 15-1 in doubles overall during the 2022-23 season.
