The Australian Open is behind us, and two great rivals are once again tied for the top! Novak Djokovic clinched his 22nd Major title in Melbourne, equaling Rafael Nadal’s record and making history. Novak’s coach, Goran Ivanisevic, described their rivalry as a handball match tied 22-22, with the next duel on Rafa’s court in June.
Ivanisevic continues to rank Nadal above Djokovic and everyone else at Roland Garros, praising his incredible record in Paris and calling him the favorite to win the 15th title. Still, Ivanisevic gives Djokovic, Alcaraz and a couple of other players a chance to beat the king of Roland Garros, especially if he doesn’t play 100%.
The Serb is now in a much better position, playing at a high level and with his sights set on Roland Garros and Wimbledon. On the other hand, Nadal has been fighting injuries for months. The Spaniard has won only five matches after last Wimbledon and suffered an early defeat at the Australian Open after a left hip injury.
Novak defeated Rafa in the semifinal in Paris two years ago, en route to his second Major on clay. Nadal avenged that defeat last year, meeting Djokovic in the quarterfinals and beating him 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 in four hours and 12 minutes.
Despite the cold, heavy and slow conditions of the Philippe-Chatrier track, Nadal got the best of him to beat Djokovic after another memorable marathon. Novak rallied in the second set and went all-in for Rafa in the fourth, only to lose set point and miss a tie break.
Rafa made the difference with his second serve, keeping him safe and dominating Novak in crucial moments. Nadal saved eight of 12 break chances and converted 43% of return points on seven breaks of 17 chances.
Toni Nadal opens up on Rafa
Rafael Nadal’s uncle Toni recently opened up about how the Spaniard has been dealing with fatherhood.
“My relationship with the child is the same as I would have with any family member. He is my nephew’s son, and I am delighted because, for the moment, he is the youngest of the family. We are all very happy and with the satisfaction of seeing another child in the family,” he said.
“Well, I imagine that his father Rafael, who is very fond of sports, will have plenty of time to dedicate to his son and try to get him to play something. Although in the end, the decision of whether or not children play is more theirs than that of their parents or relatives,” Toni said.
