Rafael Nadal’s wife Maria Francisca Perello broke into tears while watching her husband struggle with an injury in his Australian Open second-round match. Nadal, who captured his second Australian Open title in 2022, had his Australian Open title defence come to an end following a 6-4 6-4 7-5 loss to Mackenzie McDonald.
Even though Nadal was clearly struggling with something, he refused to just retire the match. After the match was over, Nadal revealed that he was plagued by a hip injury and admitted he just didn’t feel that retiring as a defending champion would have been right.
“I didn’t ask my team, I’m old enough to make my own decisions. Being the defending champion, I did not want to retire here. Just try your best till the end no matter the chances, that is the philosophy of the sport,” Nadal explained, per Eurosport.

Nadal ‘mentally destroyed’ after a brutal luck at the Australian Open
The past few seasons have been all but easy for Nadal health-wise.
Now, Nadal is starting with an injury at the very start of the 2023 season. After exiting the Australian Open, Nadal admitted it was a devastating end to his Australian Open campaign. “It’s frustrating and difficult to accept.
I can’t come here and say life is fantastic right now, not now. Now is a tough moment, I need to accept that and keep going. In the end, I can’t complain about my life at all. I can’t say I’m not destroyed mentally because I would be lying,” Nadal said.
Nadal has had a very rough start to the 2023 season but he has indicated that his career is not over and that he will do his best to return to tennis. When will Nadal play again remains to be seen but what we know is that he is signed up to play Dubai, which starts in late February.
