Holger Rune, the young Danish talent who will turn 20 on April 29, was interviewed by the Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport. In the interview, he said he foresees a bright career, with the hope of being part of the Big Three of the future together with Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.
Rune said: “I’m not arrogant, I’m just passionate about what I do. I want to win, but I also want to put on a show on the court. I think it’s very good that there’s a variety of characters on the circuit, otherwise it would all be very boring.” With regard to the future of tennis, Rune responded by praising, among other things, Sinner himself: “It’s a difficult question, but I know it!
One of the trio I hope to be me, then Alcaraz, who has already shown that he knows how to win Grand Slams, and finally Sinner. He has an incredible attitude. He looks like he’s been on the tour for a lifetime but he’s just 21, and every time he plays he shows improvement.”
Holger Rune dreams big: “Me, Alcaraz and Sinner…”
Since his explosion of talent last season, Holger Rune’s rise up the ATP rankings has been nothing short of impressive.
The path of the native of Gentofte took him to the pinnacle in Paris-Bercy, where he triumphed by beating a certain Novak Djokovic in the final, and since then his race has never stopped. Today, the Dane is number eight in the world and in this first glimpse of 2023 he has already reached the semifinals in Montpellier and Acapulco.
A hunger for improvement that distinguishes the young Rune, openly taken by a sort of craving for perfection. He said: “I work very hard, but I also think it’s very important to really want to improve, to see that the work is paying off and to enjoy it.
I love tennis so much that I want to be perfect, even though I know I can’t be, but I think that’s the exciting part, the feeling that you can always improve. There are no limits, and that excites me.” Looking to the present, Rune has qualified to the round of 16 of the Masters 1000 in Miami where he will face Taylor Fritz.
