During and after the US Open, Williams never said that she was 100% percent done with pro tennis, leaving the doors open for a potential comeback at some point.
Now, Williams admits she feels torn because she believes she is still able to play at a very high level. However, Williams noted that she feels more at peace with her decision as time goes by. “I for sure feel more at peace now.
It’s interesting. I think I feel torn because I’m still able to play at a very, very, very high level. With that being said, I always wanted to leave the game playing at a very high level. But it’s hard because it’s like, ‘Oh my gosh, I could still play, and I could still do all that stuff.’
But I’m inch by inch leaning away, inch by inch embracing it,” Williams explained. In the final tournament of her career, Williams defeated Anett Kontaveit. At the time of their match, Kontaveit was the second-ranked player in the world.
Even though Williams was beaten by Ajla Tomljanovic in the US Open third round, beating Kontaveit proved that she still had the game to beat the very best players in the game.
