Sloane Stephens and mental health
Sloane talked in a long interview in recent months about her mental health.
A very important topic that has many nuances, even among top-level professional athletes. She said: “I’m one of those people who loves to tell stories and finds it very easy to say how they feel, I’m used to it since I’ve been going to therapy since I was only 13.
My mother is a psychologist, I had an extreme relationship so with this thing but there are also people who have had nothing. I hope that in the future people can all get the support they need and not feel judged for what they feel or do.”
Stephens said it was really difficult for her to debut on the Tour at such a young age and said: “When I was 18 I was already a professional athlete and I had to juggle millions of people watching me play tennis every day.
It was all unbearable. Now, after some time, I’ve finally learned to recognize negative feelings and I know how to deal with it. I am grateful to share my entire story and many people have had great support following my situation.
I am able to handle emotions and I know I need a minute to take by myself. Once all people are able to accept that there is a you behind the athlete or celebrity, everything becomes much easier.”
