American tennis star Taylor Fritz admitted he was absolutely delighted with his 2023 Delray Beach Open campaign. Fritz, the top-ranked American male tennis player, defeated Miomir Kecmanovic in the Delray Beach final 6-0 5-7 6-2 to win his first Delray Beach title.
Fritz, 25, was playing in Delray Beach for the sixth time in his career. After suffering back-to-back first-round exits in Delray Beach in 2019 and 2020, Fritz didn’t play at the tournament again until this year. “My first time back here in quite a while and the event was amazing.
The fans especially, the turnout was incredible and it makes me really proud to be an American playing at a home event, with how many people were in the stands. This year was incredible after losing in the first and second round [almost] every single year I’d been here.
I couldn’t be happier with coming back and having this result,” Fritz said, per the ATP website.
How Fritz beat Kecmanovic in the Delray Beach final?
Fritz got off to an outstanding start to the Delray Beach final as he broke Kecmanovic three times in the first set – all while not allowing a single break point – to easily win the opener.
After easily losing the first set, Kecmanovic found a bit of rhythm and started playing much better. Leading 4-3 in the second set, Fritz had the first break points of the set but Kecmanovic saved both of the American’s break point chances to tie the set to four games apiece.
In the 10th game – when Kecmanovic was serving to stay in the final – he saved a championship point to tie the set to five games apiece. After saving a championship point, Kecmanovic earned his first break of the match in the 11th game and served out for the second set in the following game.
However, Fritz failing to close out the final in two sets didn’t impact the American as he broke Kecmanovic in the fourth and eighth games of the third set to seal the Delray Beach title.
