One of the events with the highest rate of history within the PGA Tour is approaching. There is not only the immense number of victories by Tiger Woods, eight, to characterize the Arnold Palmer Invitational: in fact we are talking about a tournament traditionally attended from all the big names, and 2023 is no exception.
If a real starting point in Masters projection can be defined, it is without a doubt this, with the 20 million prize money offered in that of the Bay Hill Club and Lodge, with its iconic par 72 opened in 1961 and, five years later, initiator of a long history.

Francesco Molinari, who has wonderful memories linked to 2019, is back right here to compete. It was here, in fact, that he won in a comeback, climbing almost 20 positions in the last lap.
It is still today his last success on the PGA Tour; today the Turinese (who also saw his brother Edoardo finish second to him in 2010) is simply trying to regain form and ability to fight with the best on the way to Augusta.
As usual, the fight against the world number 1 is the main topic. Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy could take care of unseating Jon Rahm. For the American to overtake the Spanish, there must be three possible scenarios. The first is that of victory without Rahm second alone or in pairs, the second is linked, in fact, to a second position alone with Rahm worse than ninth in pairs and to a second position in pairs with Rahm worse than 25th alone.
In the latter two cases, McIlroy is also the winner. As for the Northern Irishman, the only chance is success with Rahm worse than fifth as a couple. Inevitably the three duelists are the big favorites here, but also watch out for the form of both American Max Homa, never out of the top 25 since 2020 at Bay Hill, and Englishman Tyrrell Hatton, who is in a great moment with two top tens in 2023.
Tre dei quattro grandi tornei Major si svolgono nell’arco di otto settimane, tra giugno e agosto. In passato, questo fatto ha minacciato di rendere i rimanenti due mesi e mezzo della stagione poco interessanti, perché alcuni dei migliori giocatori da allora in poi decidevano di gareggiare meno.
La soluzione è stata di l’introduzione di un nuovo tipo di classifica, la FedEx Cup. Da gennaio alla metà di agosto i giocatori competono in tornei che formano la “stagione regolare” e guadagnano punti per la FedEx Cup, oltre al montepremi in palio.
Alla fine della stagione regolare i primi 144 giocatori della classifica della FedEx Cup si qualificano per la disputa dei “playoff”, quattro tornei che si svolgono tra la metà di agosto e la metà di settembre.
Il numero di partecipanti in questi tornei viene progressivamente ridotto da 144 a 120 a 70 e alla fine ai 30 che tradizionalmente partecipano al Tour Championship. In questi tornei si possono conquistare altri punti validi per la FedEx Cup.
Alla fine del Tour Championship, chi ha accumulato più punti è il campione stagionale. Per mettere in atto questo nuovo sistema il PGA Tour ha dovuto apportare cambiamenti significativi al calendario tradizionale.
