
The Virginia University women’s tennis team earned a 5-2 victory against Virginia Tech, on Thursday April 2023, in a Smithfield Commonwealth Clash game at the Virginia Tennis Facility at the Boar’s Head Resort. This is Virginia’s 10th win in their last 11 games.
Coach Sara O’Leary told: “I loved the joy and conviction with which Julia played on Senior Day today. She meant a lot to this program and I know everyone played in her honor today. We are thrilled to be able to add a point favor of UVA at the Commonwealth Clash and we’ll start preparing for our final weekend of ACC regular season play next weekend.” Hibah Shaikh clinched victory for the Cavaliers with a third-court victory.
The Cavaliers clinched the doubles point with 6-0 wins by Mélodie Collard and Julia Adams on court one and by Elaine Chervinsky and Natasha Subhash on court two. Annabelle Xu returned to action, seeing her first action since February 12, partnering Sara Ziodato in three doubles to secure a 6-2 win.
Adams, a graduate student who was honored before the Senior Day game, opened up singles play with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Tamara Barad Itzhaki to give UVA a 2-0 lead. Ziodato made it 3-0 in a 6-2, 6-2 from five win before the Hokies mustered a point on court six.
Shaikh capped off her 6-3, 6-1 win against Dariya Radulov to give UVA a 4-1 lead. ACC Freshman of the Week Ozlem Uslu won a tiebreaker to take the second set and tied on court one at 4-2. Chervinsky trailed 5-0 in the first set of hers against Semra Aksu on court four and dropped the opener 6-2 before recovering to take the last two sets 6-1 and 6-4 to close out the match.
