Wu Yibing joked he should take the credit for John Isner’s big donation after the big-serving American dropped 44 aces against him. At the Dallas Open, Isner pledged to donate $100 to charity per every ace he served during the tournament.
In the Dallas final, Isner served 44 aces – which brought his tournament total to 138 aces ($13,800). After Wu saved four championship points in a 6-7 (4) 7-6 (3) 7-6 (12) win over Isner, the Chinese joked it was a good thing that someone would benefit from all those aces Isner served against him.
“It was a tough match. I’m facing, I don’t know 100 aces. It’s a good thing he has this $100 thing, this makes more kids happy. I will take credit for that, because I’m not even moving when he serves,” Wu said, as quoted on Eurosport.
Wu beat Isner to make history
By beating Isner in the Dallas final, 23-year-old Wu became the first-ever Chinese player with an ATP title. “I made history here for my country. I’m very proud of myself and especially thanks to all the fans and my team who came here and supported [me].
I couldn’t do this without all of you guys,” Wu said of making history. After finishing as runner-up at the Cleveland Challenger in the first week of February, Wu broke into the top-100 for the first time in his career.
Then last week, Wu made it all the way in Dallas for his first ATP title and a career-high ranking of No 58 in the world. In Dallas, Wu beat several well-known names en route to winning the title – Isner, Taylor Fritz, Denis Shapovalov, Adrian Mannarino and Michael Mmoh.
After two deep runs at the Cleveland Challenger and Dallas Open, Wu is not competing anywhere this week. It remains to be seen if Wu can continue his rise in the upcoming period.
